The topic of today's podcast: The New England Patriots broke my foundation! How can I repair it?
Narrator: So Adam, I had to chuckle when you introduced this topic to me. It sounds like another great case study. What happened here?
Adam: Well, this one—it’s kind of funny. However, it wasn’t so funny for the homeowner in this case. The New England Patriots didn’t actually break the foundation, but what happened was that on their way to their big game run this year, after one of the playoff games, it got a little snowy. Down on Cape Cod, that snow got a little slippery, and one of the people celebrating the end of the Patriots game on their way home got caught up in that snow. They slid off the road and bumped into a house.
Unfortunately, that caused some damage to the foundation. After the building department came out and deemed that the house was still safe and livable, they brought us in to figure out how we could save the foundation without having to lift the whole house, get underneath it, or pier it. The question was: are there other options to save the foundation?
This particular foundation issue involved a block foundation, which is very typical for many homes on Cape Cod. The way the car hit it after the Patriots game, it kind of glanced off and cracked a horizontal line across the foundation blocks, with a very small push inward.
What we did was evaluate the situation, work with the building department, and get an engineer involved as well. We were able to install structural carbon fiber on that foundation to tie everything back together and prevent it from being pushed any further.
After that, the building department came through, evaluated the installation, and signed off that everything was good to go.
So, it was a very scary moment during a time of celebration—watching the Pats walk off the field—for this homeowner. But they were very happy that everything was okay in the end. Nobody really got hurt, and the Patriots got to continue to play in this great playoff run.
I’m not going to blame them directly, because they did a pretty good job of winning the game, but this is one of those weird reminders that anything can happen—crazy things. Unfortunately for this particular homeowner, their house was in the way of a car sliding off the road. But everyone was safe, and everyone was okay at the end of the day.
So, we came in to rescue the foundation while the Patriots get to continue to play on this winter.
