If the Basement Smells Musty it is Wet

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, June 27, 2012

The American Lung Association, American Medical Association, and the EPA recommend maintaining relative humidity level in the 30% - 50% range.  In the summer in Massachusetts, the weather is more humid. Basements and crawl spaces tend to be more humid relative to the rest of the home because they are almost entirely subterranean, or below ground.

Studies have shown that as much as 50% of the air in your home comes from your basement or crawlspace. As a result in the summer, your home air is humid because basement air often is high in moisture content.

Air with high moisture content carries with it various allergens and musty odors. So even though you don’t see water in your basement or crawl space, this does not mean the spaces are dry. If they feel moist, or smell musty, they carry moisture.

In areas of the home where humidity hovers higher than 50% mold, mildew, and bacteria growth can begin resulting in health problems and allergic reactions. For the protection from moisture, mold, musty odors and allergens, contact A1 Foundation Crack Repair about our dual air, large capacity dehumidifiers.
