Home Nearly Sinks from Failed Lally Columns – Boston, Quincy, MA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 31, 2016

We got a call by a customer who has a house in Quincy, MA. He wanted us to replace lally columns. Because he said there were about 15 that needed replacing, we went out there to look at it. The floor of the basement had caved in in certain areas. What had happened was, there was a pipe leaking under the basement floor. It must have flooded beneath the floor and washed the soil away. The soil was helping to support the concrete floor so this caused the floor to sink. To make matters worse, in the middle of the floor was a three foot high pour of concrete, it was about three feet high and the lally columns were sitting on that. You could look underneath that floor and see about a foot of air before you got to the soil. The lally columns were not sitting on anything, they were literally floating in thin air. We went out again with an engineer and came up with a plan to solve his problem.
