Are Basement Cracks Serious?

Joseph Coupal - Saturday, January 19, 2013

Far too often, homes in the North East, like Rhode Island and Massachusetts, have foundations that are collapsing. Waterproofing the basement can help you avoid this highly expensive problem. Basement waterproofing helps keep your foundation and basement walls safe and secure.

Are Cracks in the Basement Walls Serious?

A crack in the walls or floor of the basement, even if they're quite small, can be a sign of much bigger problems to come. Neglecting basement cracks can cause some very expensive problems from water damage, structural issues and mold.

Water from rain or snow seeps into the ground and swells the soil. Different soils swell to different levels, but all soil swells.

This exerts extra pressure on the basement and foundation walls which makes the foundation walls bow and crack. If the cracks are left untreated, they can become serious and eventually cause the walls to crumble. You'll start to see horizontal cracks which are indicative that your basement wall is beginning to push in or even buckle. Horizontal cracks are often caused by frost heave against the wall.  These types of foundation cracks may denote a structural issue and basement crack repair should be done immediately
